Japan’s anime industry posted a record year in 2024, reaching a total market value of JPY 3.84 trillion, about $25.25 billion, according to the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA). The figures were unveiled at TIFFCOM, the rights market of the Tokyo International Film Festival, signaling a sustained surge driven by global demand for Japanese animation. The AJA report highlights strong growth across streaming, licensing, merchandising, and international distribution as Japanese studios expand beyond domestic borders. During the TIFFCOM session, Toho Global, the studio behind Godzilla, shared insights into its international strategy and ongoing collaborations to monetize anime content worldwide. Industry analysts attribute the record results to a global boom in anime popularity, rising export revenues, and continued investment in IP development and cross-platform releases.
