UK Government Demands Tech Giants Block Nude Images on Children's Devices

The UK government has given tech companies Apple and Google a three-month deadline to prevent children from accessing nude images on their devices. This move is part of a broader effort to protect minors from explicit content and comes as concerns over online safety continue to mount.

Sir Keir Starmer, addressing the issue at London Tech Week, emphasized that this is not an insurmountable challenge for companies known for their innovation. The government is prepared to introduce legislation that would compel these firms to activate built-in features or update their software to prevent the viewing, sending, or taking of sexually explicit images by children.

Google has expressed its commitment to protecting children online, stating it is working with UK partners to find solutions that preserve privacy while ensuring a safe digital environment. Apple, however, has not responded to requests for comment.

The proposed measures could involve fines or, in extreme cases, criminal liability for non-compliant companies. The legislation would apply to both new and existing smartphones and tablets in the UK, without affecting devices used by adults who verify their age.

Some tech companies already have methods in place to prevent children from accessing nude imagery. For instance, Apple's 'Communication Safety' feature warns children with a Child Account when they send or receive images containing nudity and provides them with resources for help and support.

Third-party companies have also developed technology to detect and block children from capturing or sharing nude images. The government has highlighted an AI tool by safety tech firm SafeToNet as an example of how firms can safely scale on-device detection and blocking of such content for children.

However, there are concerns that expanding these tools to apps not operated by the tech giants and turning them on by default could impact user privacy. This might require adults to verify their age to opt out of or disable nude image blocking, raising questions about the balance between protection and privacy.

The UK has already introduced the Online Safety Act to protect children online, enforced by media regulator Ofcom. Despite this, child safety campaigners are pushing for more stringent measures to prevent children from viewing or sharing nude images, citing concerns over online grooming and sextortion.

According to the government, 91% of online child sexual abuse reports in 2024 contained self-generated content from children, and the average child now views pornography by the age of 13. These statistics underscore the urgency of the situation and the need for effective solutions.

The plans announced by the UK government mark a significant step towards holding tech companies accountable for the content accessible on their platforms. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the challenge of balancing freedom of information with the need to protect vulnerable populations will remain at the forefront of regulatory efforts.
