A deeply religious Muslim family in Berlin is on the brink of collapse when a son's secret relationship with a man is revealed in the upcoming film Hijamat, written and directed by Nader Saeivar and produced and edited by Jafar Panahi. The film, which will world premiere at the 60th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) next month, features a talented ensemble cast led by Kida Khodr Ramadan and Jael Cem Ilhan.
In Hijamat, Ilhan plays Kerem, whose secret relationship with a man is exposed, sending shockwaves through his family and local community. His brother Murad, portrayed by Ramadan, struggles to protect him, while long-buried secrets threaten to emerge and tear the family apart. The news of Kerem's relationship sparks intense tension within the family, particularly between Murad and their father, Ibrahim, who has close ties to the local imam.
Murad is torn between his loyalty to his family and his desire to support his brother, highlighting the complex and often conflicting nature of traditional Muslim values and personal identity. As the family navigates this difficult situation, they must confront their own biases and prejudices, leading to a deeper exploration of what it means to be a Muslim and the challenges of balancing faith and personal freedom.
The film's world premiere at KVIFF marks a significant milestone in the careers of Saeivar and Panahi, who have previously collaborated on the Cannes 2025 Palme d'Or winner It Was Just An Accident. Hijamat is also produced by Said Nur Akkuş and his company ArtHood Films, with co-producers sugarWorkz, Lightburst Pictures, and JPJ Film Productions.
The film's exploration of themes such as identity, tradition, and personal freedom is both timely and thought-provoking, offering a unique perspective on the challenges faced by Muslim families and individuals in modern society. With its talented cast, gripping storyline, and nuanced exploration of complex themes, Hijamat is sure to resonate with audiences and spark important conversations about the importance of acceptance, understanding, and empathy.
