Lee Chang-dong to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Malaysia International Film Festival

The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) has announced that renowned South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong will be the recipient of its lifetime achievement award. This honor is a culmination of Lee's dedication to creating cinematic masterpieces that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.

Lee Chang-dong's journey into filmmaking was not conventional. He began his career as a novelist in the 1980s, writing fiction that captured the essence of South Korea's tumultuous years under military dictatorship. His transition into filmmaking came later in life, with his first feature film released when he was over 40. Despite the late start, Lee has made an indelible mark on the film industry, with each of his films being met with critical acclaim and festival recognition.

His filmography includes notable works such as Peppermint Candy (1998), Oasis (2002), Secret Sunshine (2007), Poetry (2010), and Burning (2018), each exploring themes of grief, social alienation, and moral ambiguity with a unique literary intensity. Lee's films have not only garnered awards at prestigious festivals like Venice and Cannes but have also inspired a new generation of filmmakers and cinephiles.

Beyond his cinematic achievements, Lee Chang-dong has also made significant contributions to South Korea's cultural landscape. He served as the country's Minister of Culture and Tourism from 2003 to 2004, underscoring his commitment to the arts and their role in shaping society. His literary works have recently gained international recognition, with the publication of Snowy Day and Other Stories, his first English-language collection of fiction, by Penguin Press in 2025.

Lee is currently working on a new film, Possible Love, which is backed by Netflix and anticipated to make its debut at the Venice Film Festival. This upcoming project marks his return to the screen and is expected to continue his legacy of creating thought-provoking and emotionally charged cinema.

The Malaysia International Film Festival, themed 'Resonance' this year, will run from July 18 to 25, featuring a diverse lineup of 65 films from 35 countries. The festival will open with the world premiere of BAGA: Tomorrow Belongs to No One by Malaysian director Ariff Zulkarnain and close with Yellow Letters, the Berlinale Golden Bear winner by İlker Çatak. Other notable events include the presentation of an Excellent Achievement in Film Award to Chinese action star and filmmaker Wu Jing and the Malaysia Golden Global Awards, which will recognize emerging talent in filmmaking.
